What Happens When Critical Thinking Meets Superstition Early Enough?

RachelSlick“Give me a child until he is seven and I will give you the man.” These words were famously attributed to the Jesuit order and are as profound as they are disturbing. In essence the Jesuits (and I would argue most clergy of any religous persuasion) knew that indoctrinating a child as early as possible was the key to making a good believer. What can one say about a philosophy that works best on minds too young to know that Santa Claus is not real? But sometimes, just sometimes we get lucky and logic is able to undo some of our most dogmatic impressions of early childhood.
